STATE VEHICLE TAX TOOL

Utah Car Tax Calculator

Utah vehicle taxes, fees, and taxable-value rules can vary by transaction type and local law. This calculator intentionally starts with a blank rate so you can enter the current rate you verify for your transaction.

Which Utah rate should you enter?

Utah DMV instructs buyers to use the locality where the vehicle is purchased for a dealer sale, or the locality where it will be registered otherwise. Confirm the combined rate and effective date for your transaction in the Utah sales and use tax rate tables; a statewide rate alone may miss local tax.

See the Utah DMV buyer and seller instructions for the tax-base and location rules. Out-of-state transactions or exemptions may need additional guidance.

How to use this estimate

  1. Enter the vehicle purchase price. Ask the dealer or DMV if your transaction uses a different taxable value.
  2. Enter your verified percentage as a number such as 7, not 0.07. The field starts empty because the tool does not look up your location.
  3. Enter a qualifying trade-in allowance and check the credit box only if it applies to your transaction. Utah Publication 5 describes eligible trade-in treatment; this tool does not determine eligibility.
  4. Add your estimated title, registration and other fees separately. These are entered amounts, not an automatic Utah fee schedule.

Worked example: a $40,000 purchase

With a $10,000 qualifying trade-in, the credit box checked, an illustrative 7% rate and $300 in entered fees, the taxable amount is $30,000. Estimated tax is $2,100 and tax plus fees is $2,400. Without the credit, the same example totals $3,100. The 7% rate and $300 fee amount are examples only.

What the result includes

The result is tax plus the fees you enter, not the vehicle price, a monthly payment or a complete out-the-door quote. It does not automatically handle rebates, special exemptions, taxable dealer charges, lease taxes or credits for tax paid elsewhere. Review those items before using the estimate to plan financing.

Next, use the car payment calculator to include the estimated tax in a loan, or compare five-year ownership costs.

Why the actual amount can differ

Registration address, local rates, dealer versus private-party sale, taxable-value rules, trade-in treatment, exemptions, rebates, fees, and title status can change the calculation. Recheck the official source before relying on the estimate.
